Report of the Kebnekaise by Boyan Sheytanov

It starts with an awfully long train trip. The train is 2 hours late, but SJ have buses prepared for everyone. Nikkaluokta greets a full bus of over 40 people with sun and clear sky. Autumn colors are already prevailing - yellow, orange, red, occasional green. The winding trail offers beautiful views of hills showing above the birch trees. The still waters of lakes small and big mirror everything to make it twice as colorful. People pass by me and I pass by others. We walk together with some for a while, and then with others. A stop at LapDänalds, where a lot of people take the boat to save 1 hour of walking. I decide to save 250 SEK. After 5 hours in a steady pace, I am at the mountain station. Time for dinner and shortly after that - bed, as a long day awaits. 5 in the morning and I am up. Quick preparation of the backpack and we're off at 5:30 - a group of about 20 Swedes and 1 Bulgarian. The first sunlight shines over the hills. Higher peaks are still in clouds, shy to show themselves to us. The trail starts flat and it's breakfast time right before the steep slopes begin. As we make our way up, clouds scatter and we get a really wonderful view of Duolbagorni. The trail turns into a path across stones and creeks. An occasional mist engulfs what's ahead, but after that sun prevails again. The best weather we can get here, the Swedes explain. Up and down across boulders and pebbles, here we are at the wind shelter below the top. It's lunch time, and soon we are off for the south peak. At this height, it's clouds and wind. Suddenly, a snow pile appears right in front of us - the south peak. A steep climb, but we're there. There's really not enough room for everyone up there and the wind is strong enough that after a photo or two, you are back down on the rocks. The way down is kind of tedious - stone after stone, you make your careful steps. Weather is going worse and no sun shines through the clouds. At 17:30 we are back at the station. There's nothing better than a beer in a sauna after such a long walk. The next day the weather is bad (clouds and rain), but I decide to go to Tarfalastugan, as it would be rather boring to spend the whole day in the station. It starts well down the valley of the river, but as the trail goes higher and into the clouds, you can barely see everything. There's no one around but the rocks and they tend to look really creepy in fog. Twice I get back to check if I am on the right way, with the help of the map. Two Swedes accompany me for a while, but afraid of getting lost, head back to the mountain station. Almost on the verge of getting back, the buildings of the hut appear as a mirage in front of me. It's warm inside, but after a chat with the hut warden I need to head back. Wind is blowing against me, making me all wet. I get a faster pace and not long after I'm back down in the valley, where it's drier and not so depressing. Back in the hut, there's nothing better that a sauna with a beer after such a wet walk. Like it or not, it's time to get back to Nikkaluokta. With a slow pace and a lot of stops for photos, I walk down the trail, stopping for a reindeer hamburger. It's cloudy, but the rain waited for me to reach Nikkaluokta before pouring itself over. It's time for another long train trip. Overwhelmed with everything I've seen, I fall asleep, dreaming of stones and creeks, valleys and peaks, birches and lakes, and a white reindeer.

Report of the last semester and the summer

Dear new and old friends!
it looks like it has been a long while since we updated the hiking club's blog. We can simply accuse Facebook for this as well! :)
All the recent activities are recorded on the facebook group.
I think I should start from the bouldering on 19th September 2010:
It was a climbing event which Mansour had planned. There were a couple of climbers who showed up but because of the bad luck it had been raining and the rocks were slippery so it was impossible to climb and do any kind of bouldering.

The next event was the trip to Norway 24 to 26 September 2010:
We were 8 people and two cars. The MDH Hiking Club supported us with cooking stove, car expenses and tents and sleeping bags. It was such a nice trip with super nice company.
We were a multinational group as always:
Nick from USA, Pawel from Czech Republic, Walter from USA, Mahgol from Iran, Jackie from Sweden, Arno from Germany, Bruno from Croatia and Constance from France. We made it to Lysefjord, Ljerag and trolltunga. Mahgol and Constance got some problem with their ankles and knee and could not follow to the the rest of the trip rather than trolltunga. (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=161069003905616)

The next trip was a 14 km hiking to Hallstahammar on November 7th:
They were just three people, Constance, Peter and Koen.
They said that it was so cold and tough. But our heroes did it!
In that time of the year, it is a lot of snow and the sun sets at around 3 PM but they made it.

Then our hiking club faced a long depression period because of many reasons but on

Maj 13th 2011 we got contacted by svartådalen organization which takes care of a hiking trail close to västerås and we decided to help them as we did in year 2010.
We were a group of 5 people: Shahab Fekri, Mahgol Amin, Hossein Nourozian, Neda Kazemie and Eric Söderberg who drove up to the trail and marked it and cut some extra branches and got some lessons about Swedish forest.

And then when it became warmer it was time for a more serious trip and we decided to go to Kebnekaise which is Sweden's highest peak. 9th to 16th of August 2011 was the set date and we were a group of 4 people. Shahab, Mahgol, Melika and Björn. We partly took the train and partly plain and got ourselves to the Kebnekaise fjälstation and made day trips in the Kebnekaise area.
Now you can say that the blog is updated.
The next post which will come very soon will be mostly about the upcoming events for the Autumn semester 2011-2012
Until then stay happy and blessed.
Cheers

report on the 37th trip by Walter Abbott

Saturday September 11 marked the first excursion of the hiking club. A group of 11 brave souls set off on a trek that they will surely all remember for a very long time.

We headed north along the bike path that is right by the school, headed past ABB stadium and then again continue

d our northward progress. Our hike lead us through a very neat little Colonyplot and we got to see many beautiful sights that are

hidden in the remote swedish country side. The Hike lasted from about 10am to 6pm and we covered a distance of approximately 23km. Rain was forecast for the whole day, but we got very lucky and it only rained just a little mist for a while. After a long day of lively conversation and lovely scenery we finished our journey at a church, where we caught a bus back to Vasteras. The journey was a great success and the next trip will be one that you certainly don't want to miss.

37th trip, Sep 11th

Let's meet at the main entrance of the school on Saturday the 11th at 10 sharp.
We walk on bruksleden (www.bruksleden.se) towards Skultuna. It might not take longer than 5 hours to reach the cottgae.
There is place for 8 people to sleep in the cottage in their own sleeping bags and there are already this number of people who have registered for it in the last meeting we had on friday the 3rd..
Others who join can bring their own tents and stay outside or get the bus back to Västerås.
There is a bus going for a church nearby (3 km) every 70 minutes.
I think we can take the bus at 17:27 if not the next one will be good enough.
The others who sleep over the night in the cottage or tent! can choose to walk back to Västerås or take the bus the day after which starts from 9 in the morning but is not so often.
Good shoes, proper clothes and enough food and water is very very important.
For any further questions contact me. 070 74 17 386 - mahgol.amin@gmail.com
The temperature will be between 13 and 18 C and there is a risk of rain up to 2 mm.

New school year 2010 - 2011

Hi every body, new and old! :)

We welcome you here if it is your first time visiting our weblog.

As you can find out from a fast browse on our older posts you find out that we have had at least two activities each month for the last two years but, this year, Constance is not sure about her plans, Melika and Björn have not set any plans and I am going to be working and studying at the same time and have a kind of tight schedule and there has been no body volunteer to help out yet.

So we have just four major activities planned for the whole school year of which two of them are ready to release now.

There will be two three-days trips, one in September and one in November. If we get enough budget from the International Committee, these trips will be free of charge for the students and the costs will be covered by the IC, if not then the costs will be divided between the participants.

Let say we go on Friday the 10th of September and come back on Sunday the 12th for the first one. We stay in cottages in the woods. The trip includes a hiking of at least 30 km in total.

The one in the November looks to be between 12th and 14th.

We will come back to you as soon as possible with more details.

Dont hesitate to contact us if you can help us out or you need to be helped out :)

Have a nice continue of the summer.
